Installing On Ubuntu Linux

Updated: Documentation below is for version 0.55 on Ubuntu 10.04

Recommended system requirements: As with anything using webcams and video, more is better. I suggest Intel dual-core systems with a couple of gigs of RAM, but WebcamStudio can run on a 2.0+ Ghz CPU system that is AMD based too. The thing to remember is that you are asking the PC to do some pretty intensive stuff while keeping up with a decent frame rate. ;)

Installing using a Debian package

(The old repository is no longer available, please use the deb package instead)

Locate the Webcamstudio.deb package, double click it and follow the prompts for an installation.

Getting WebcamStudio setup

(Ubuntu 9.10 and earlier -- not needed with Ubuntu 10.04)

Now do the following:
  1. Goto System, Administration, "Users and Groups".
  2. Click unlock button, then Manage groups.
  3. Then click Add Group, give a group name as video.
  4. Check the box with your Ubuntu user name, click Ok, Close and Close. Reboot.
  5.  (Note: If you are alerted that this group already exists, don't worry about creating it, despite not seeing it the group may exist already)
  6. Restart the computer.
And you are done! From here on out, you are able to start a working copy of WebcamStudio with no more effort than it takes to click a menu icon.

Working with Ustream

(Use for all Ubuntu releases)

Out of the box, Flash is likely blocking the Ustream broadcaster as the always ask permission function does not always work in flash. Here is the fix.

1) Close everything including other browser pages.
2) Goto this page here.
3) As you can see from the image above, you need to make sure that anything with ustream.tv in it is set to "always allow", not "always ask". This is represented with the green check mark.
4) After changing this, close browser completely and try WebcamStudio again. Then open up the browser and goto Ustream's broadcaster.
